Course Syllabus
Foundations for Fine
Woodworking is a unique series of five two day courses designed to teach
participants the skills required to build fine furniture.
Foundations V focuses on the construction of various types of doors to be applied
to a carcass. Emphasis will be placed on
the frame and panel construction door made with hand and power tools.
Description: Registrants will be instructed through
lecture, demonstrations, and hands on experiences in the following areas and/or
topics:
Door Construction:
1.
Discussion of
joinery for door construction
2.
Various types
and styles of doors will be shown and demonstrated
3.
Discussion and
demonstration on techniques to size and build a door
4.
Time will be
spent on how to layout and select the proper wood to use based on the application
and design desired
5.
Discussion on importance of how to finish the
panel and frame before assembly
6.
LAB: Participants will design, layout and build a door
and fit it into a pre-built carcass with accuracy and precision
Finishing Techniques:
1.
Demonstrate the
various techniques for finishing a door
2.
Selection of
the appropriate finish for various woods
3.
Use of proper
abrasives for getting that desired finish to include sandpaper, steel wool, scrapers
and other “tricks of the trade”
4.
Selection and
uses of various finishes such as shellac, lacquer, tung oil, etc.
5.
Discussion of
final surface preparation techniques
Instructional Level: Basic to intermediate
What to bring; eye protection, hearing protection, marking pencil, marking knife,
knife marking gauge, combination marking gauge, sharp ¼”, 3/8”, and ½” chisels,
sliding T bevel, small square (4-6”), back saw, coping saw, block plane
(opt). There will be a complete list of
things to bring to the class upon registration.
