THE BASICS OF TURNING
Course Fee - $250.00 plus $35.00 Materials Fee

Course Syllabus

Discover the fun and creativity of woodturning as you learn about spindle turning, bowl turning, proper tool usage, safety, and tool sharpening. You will learn how to use a spindle gouge properly to cut beads and coves of various sizes in spindles (like table legs). This training in “riding the bevel” will help you develop the tool control to make anything you want on the lathe.

Next you will make a simple carver’s mallet using spindle and bowl gouges and incorporating beads and coves to your own design. Then we will make a “confetti” oil lamp using the same gouges and techniques used previously. The second day will be spent turning bowls from green wood. You will be amazed how easy and fun it is to turn your own bowls, using a 4-jaw chuck on the lathe.

This 2-day hands-on course will give you the basics to begin woodturning, using your tools properly and safely. Wood selection and preparation, proper tool usage, tool sharpening, safety, and finishing techniques will also be discussed. A nominal fee for wood and supplies will be assessed. No prior woodturning experience is required.
